CCA News: December Edition

Written by: Noah Kidder

Mrs. Jessica is planning on taking her Second Graders to see the USS KIDD Veterans Museum. This Museum is located in Baton Rouge and features a retired battleship that unfortunately is currently under construction. Along with that excursion, they will also visit our state Capitol building, which is a skyscraper also located in Baton Rouge, LA. This fun trip outside of the classroom will happen on December 10th! Please see Mrs. Jessica for more information.

In the month of December we will have only a few schoolwide events, but they are still so fun, don’t worry.

To kick off the Christmas celebrations at CCA, we will be having a Christmas Chapel on December 12th. CCA family and friends are invited to join us for this Christmas Chapel where different classes will showcase their Christmas Spirit on the stage. Christmas Chapel begins at the same time as our regular chapel, but will be held in the gym! Please arrive by 7:50, send your students to their classrooms, then find your seats in the gym. Again, this event will be on Thursday December 12th, starting around 8:00 A.M.

Next up we will have Christmas Pajama Day on Friday, December 20th, and this the last school day before the students receive a break. Students are invited to wear pajamas to school, to celebrate 2024’s last day of school. This is also a half day, so prepare to pick up your students at 11:30! The goal of this day is really only to have fun! Some teachers and parents even have plans for students to have the most fun possible – with “Reindeer Games” for Elementary Students and “Competitive Games” for Middle and High Schoolers. If you’d like to help make this day a fun and memorable time, please see Mrs. Jessica for K-6th grade games, and Ms. Belle or Mrs. Sarah Leonards for 7-12th grade games!

Our Christmas Break ends off the month of December, which will begin at noon on December 20th and continue through January 7th. This break is for two weeks, and it is there so we can celebrate the birth of Christ with all our family, and our friends. We’ll wish farewell to 2024 and we’ll be back in the classrooms on Tuesday, January 7th of 2025!

This month, the classrooms are filled with fun activities!

To start, Mrs. Darlene’s kindergarten class is continuing Fun Friday each week. Fun Friday is a way to celebrate her students’ good behavior throughout the week. Her students are also learning their phonograms and math. Piper Bates says she was very excited to learn about counting and “doing shapes” and she also loved painting, coloring, and chalk.

In First Grade, Mrs. Christi’s students are learning to read. She says, “we are teaching the children to love reading, especially to love reading the Bible, and everyone in class is very excited when they get to read something from Scripture.” Mrs.Christi is also teaching them how to read Scripture references – Book, Chapter, then Verse.

In Second Grade, Mrs. Jessica is teaching her children about the mid-Atlantic states and capitals. They had a potluck lunch with different foods from all the different states. They’re also doing art with Miss Shirah, and when asked what they’re learning in Art, Hardy Leonards says, “Everything, I don’t know what we are doing for art, Miss Shirah doesn’t tell us.” Thankfully, Miss Shirah knows exactly what they’re doing and the kids are loving it.

Mrs. Katie is growing herbs with her Third and Fourth Graders – teaching them about Botany! Mrs. Katie’s history lessons are also perfectly timed with Thanksgiving, with them learning about William Bradford and the first Thanksgiving.

In Mrs. Anna’s classroom, the Fifth and Sixth Graders are conducting experiments in Science. They made a paper airplane and added “passengers” (paper clips) and tested how each one would affect the flight of the plane. It’s always a blast with Mrs. Anna as the teacher and her students always come away making memories and loving how she teaches each subject.

In Mr. Jordan’s Seventh and Eighth grade Humanities class, they are continuing their reading of C.S. Lewis with The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. This group of Junior High Schoolers also finished up their second module in Science, and Ms. Belle excitedly announced that every single student passed this test – and they were all given the rest of the class off to celebrate! In Grammar, they are continuing in Shurley jingles and beginning to write 5-paragraph essays, and in Logic, Mr. Jordan is filling the minds of these students with Biblical truths and reasoning skills.

For our Freshmen and Sophomores, Christmas celebrations are underway and they began in early November to decorate their entire classroom with Christmas decor – with the help of Ms. Belle’s supplies, of course. They finished up their first short story of the year in Writing & Rhetoric class, and are preparing for an upcoming Biology test with Dr. Stan. Pastor Aaron has them reading through Pride and Prejudice and The Federalist Papers in Humanities. And, if that’s not enough on their plate, they are embracing the Advent Season by learning the history behind classic christmas carols and singing them at the beginning of each school day in homeroom.

Our Juniors and Seniors have kept busy with their half days at school and afternoons working and doing extracurricular studies. As this is our first year with a graduating class, it’s exciting to watch our Seniors embark on their careers every afternoon! But while in class, they are filling their time learning Business with Ms. Paula, Economics with Mr. Jordan, Public Speaking with Pastor Brandon, and continuing their Humanities studies with Pastor Scott, where they are reading Summa Theologica.

And last but not least, Junior and Senior High Schoolers are in full holiday spirit with multiple preparations underway! First up is the Seventh-Twelfth Grade Girls Annual Christmas Party at Ms. Belle’s house on Friday, December 6. And then Caroline Robertson is continuing the tradition of a student-led Secret Santa for 9th through 12th grades, and Scarlett Cook and Claire Palmer are taking up the baton for 7th-8th grades’ Secret Santa! This gift swap will be at school on December 18th!

So many of CCA’s teachers, parents, and students are making this such a fun school year, and we are so thankful for the creativity and love poured out during these first few months of school!

We’re looking forward to even more great things in 2025!

December will be a perfect month for sports! With the weather cooling off, it’s time to get out and enjoy the outdoors! For recess, the Kindergarteners have been playing Cops and Robbers. Those who are held captive are in prison or, in their case, in ropes. And since returning from their Ren Fest field trip, our Fifth and Sixth grade class have been sword fighting out on the playground – hopefully using play swords.

For P.E, Kindergarten is still working on catching and throwing, using spikeballs and even basketballs. Miss Shirah’s hope is that when they move up a grade, they can play these games far better to keep them active and moving! Which is what First through Fourth grades are focusing on: staying active while having fun! Meanwhile, Fifth and Sixth grade are playing games such as tag or dodgeball, which include constant motion and endurance, but only after a small workout to get them started on healthy habits. For grades Ninth and Tenth, they are working on building endurance through workouts and occasionally games like basketball and spikeball!

This month, we are highlighting our Ninth & Tenth Grade Homeroom teacher, Ms. Belle Roseberry. She began teaching part-time at CCA in February of 2022, teaching Seventh and Eighth Grade Creative Writing and Earth Science. In August of that same year, she became a fulltime teacher of Pre-Kindergarten, and continued teaching Creative Writing to the highschoolers part-time. This year, she’s fulltime in the Parsonage as the Ninth & Tenth Grade Math coordinator, Writing & Rhetoric teacher, and Publications teacher. In addition to teaching CCA’s Freshmen and Sophomores, she also teaches Seventh & Eighth Grade Physical Science and Grammar. There are many things she loves about teaching so allow me to name a few.

Ms. Belle is a very competitive person, which means she loves doing all the competitions we have done so far this year. For example, in the beginning of November, for Spirit Week, we had a theme class competition day, where each class would choose a theme to dress up as. Our class decided on The Grinch and, with Ms. Belle’s help, we ended up winning. Then the following month, the Parsonage Upperclassmen had another competition called The Battle of the Doors, which you can read all about in our Parsonage Wars section. Again, with Ms. Belle’s help, we ended up winning that one, too – even though she thinks Seventh and Eighth should have won.

Ms. Belle truly wins at winning over her students with all her love, kindness, and grace; as well as with her ‘nerdy’ personality (her words). No one really enjoys school work, but her classes are different. Her teaching is a great example of a Christian teacher, with her end goal in mind being to teach the students to actually enjoy what they are learning, and even to love it. She does this by making it more interesting, while at the same time, planting God’s Word within her students.

Besides being an amazing teacher, she is also an amazing mother to her six-year-old daughter, Kenley. The two of them live in a little house in Breaux Bridge with their sweet dog, Laya, and three bunnies. When asked what she enjoys, Ms. Belle says, “reading, traveling, writing, singing, decorating, and crochet.” Oh, but we all know that she especially loves Christmas! But, I mean, who doesn’t? Her time is always spent with Kenley and together they enjoy reading, “kitchen dance parties”, singing, traveling to New Orleans with friends for mini vacations, and watching movies. She says some of her favorite movies are: Beauty and the Beast, I’ll be Home for Christmas, and 7 Brides for 7 Brothers. In conclusion, Ms. Belle is a phenomenal teacher who loves and cherishes her time with her family, friends, and her students.

Salem is in Mrs. Christi’s First Grade class.
She says, “Salem’s penmanship should be highlighted. He’s worked on capital letters and in spite of having never had cursive before this year, he has the best penmanship in the class.”
Congratulations, Salem, on excellent penmanship and keep up the good work!

November’s Victors

During the month of November, the Parsonage was packed with the sounds of warfare. Both the High School and Junior High students were rooting against one another for the title of victor. We start the month off strong on November 6th, during our lunch period, with 11th and 12th grade’s prank of rearranging the 9th and 10th grade desks. They also flipped over the tiny Christmas trees that were sitting on top of their classroom mirror. We then have the 7th and 8th graders on November 13th, also during lunch, who hid a noise maker of sorts in a tissue box behind Ms. Belle’s desk. It was found before lunch ended – and returned to them.

Last but certainly not least, we had the Battle of the Doors competition. Each classroom had a uniquely different idea, and everyone did wonderfully! To begin, our Eleventh and Twelfth graders had a door on which they all showcased their artistic creativity. Their door, promptly named The Doodle Door, was covered in different little doodles. For our Champions of the contest, Ninth and Tenth grade’s door was converted to lockers. Each student made a locker out of a cardboard box, which were filled with themes ranging from Christmas to Donuts to Pastor Scott’s Library to a spin on Politics. Finally, Seventh and Eighth grade displayed their Christmas spirit by building a Christmas themed town on their door, with real wood and Christmas lights to top it off. They even included Waldo, the Lorax, and Francis Alexander fallen on the ice. It was a wonderful door!

The excitement is contagious in the Parsonage and everyone is enjoying it, so check back next month to read all about our exhilarating warfare.

DISCLAIMER: Any pranks on the other classes must be teacher sanctioned – in other words, we have to ask our Generals (aka homeroom teachers) about it beforehand, or the authorities will command a cease fire.

This month’s Student Editor is Kloey Walling. Kloey is the daughter of Steven and Jennifer Walling and a student in Ms. Belle’s 9th Grade class. This is her first year at CCA and she has shown diligence in her work. She’s gifted at writing, loves jiu-jitsu and her siblings, one of which, Rachel, goes to CCA as well. A fun fact about Kloey is that if she were to go anywhere, she would go to Rome or Greece for its beautiful architecture. Kloey has fit into our class like a puzzle piece and we are grateful to have her in our class and as our student editor this month.

Her teachers say…
“The one thing I have noticed is that when I wax on a bit about the Bible (in context to what we’re covering in biology) and ask my inevitable questions, she usually volunteers answers and is invariably right. That is a testimony that her faith is real, she knows scripture, and that her parents are involved.”
– Dr. Stan

“Kloey’s creativity and motivation is remarkable to read when she sets her words on the page. She’s equally driven to excellence when using her gifts to edit our School Newspaper! God has truly blessed her with a talent in writing and I pray she uses these talents in the years ahead to worship and glorify God! I can’t wait to read more of her stories and delight in the fictional worlds she creates! It’s a joy to have her in class and I love getting a small glimpse at what God is doing in her life as she learns more about Him!” – Ms. Belle

“Kloey is an absolute joy to have in our class. She is a smart, kind, and humorous young woman. Three virtues come to mind when I think of why I love having Kloey in our class. First, she is a great writer and shows much potential. Second, she shows genuine care for all of her peers. Lastly, and most importantly, she possesses a love for Christ that is bold and inspiring.”
– Pastor Aaron
